The true story about Smedja (smedja
= smithy)
Once
upon a time there were a blacksmith and his wife,
who to make their fortune
went from Lochteå (Lohjtaja) in the north
southwards to Korsnäs in the middle of Ostrobothnia in Finland.
Their
names were Matts and Catharina
and they became the settlers of a homestead and a hill,
which settlement with its hill
ever since has been
called Smedbacken (Blacksmith´s
Hill).
They
got ten children and many grandchildren.
A
hundred years later there was born
a certain greatgrandchild
who was named Catharina.
Her
father was a peasant´s son, originally from
the parish of Lappfjärd in the most southern part of Ostrobothnia.
Although
life was hard and short
development
and faith in the future
have left their mark on
the life and work of generations.
Over
a hundred more years later
you will still find blacksmiths and handicraftsmen there
on the same homestead, in the same family.
